New 'Coastal Italian' restaurant coming to Beverly Boulevard

A new Italian restaurant called Sirena will be opening Jan. 17 at 8265 Beverly Blvd. (between North Harper and North Sweetzer Avenues) in Los Angeles, in the space long-occupied by Pane e Vino, which closed after 20 years in the building back in 2011.

The restaurant is helmed by executive chef Sandy Gendel along with partners Jeremy Strubel and Kenneth Curran, who designed much of the restaurant. Gendel has worked with chefs including Nancy Silverton, Alice Waters, and Jonathan Waxman, and was the opening chef at Pace and Porta Via.

The focus at Sirena will be on seafood and Mediterranean fare, using olive oil instead of butter and roux, and a wood-burning oven will be the kitchen’s focal point. Fresh bread, whole fish, pizzas, and vegetables will be cooked inside it, and in fact a hole had to be cut through the bar so the bread peel could reach all the way in. Just about everything served will be made in-house, from bread to pasta to smoked salmon.

"We are very excited at the prospect of bringing back a terrific restaurant to this storied locale," Gendel said in a press release. "We’re really aiming to join the ranks of fantastic neighborhood restaurants."


Here’s What All 17 ‘Top Chef’ Winners Are Doing Now

Top Chef, thankfully, continues to stand out from its reality TV competition. Unlike other cooking shows where you may see home cooks try to make opulent desserts, precocious child chefs get yelled at by Gordon Ramsay or industry pros forced to cook a meal from baskets filled with marmite and goat’s brains, the Emmy Award winner is actually trying to suss out who is a great chef.

Last year, for Top Chef All Stars LA, there was a bit of a cognitive dissonance. The season had been filmed the fall before, when Covid-19 virus didn’t even exist in humans. It was strange, yet at times comforting, to see a world not in lockdown unspooling before us. It offered a brief reprieve from the wrath the pandemic was exacting upon the restaurant industry that the show celebrates. This year, it’ll be different. The hosts, cheftestants, crew and rotating panel of guests judges bubbled together in Portland, Ore. like the NBA did in Orlando, to film the show’s 18th season, which kicks off this week. Though the industry is shaken and the show format altered, Top Chef will hopefully still provide a platform for rising stars to compete against each other in a grueling test of their creativity and skill. As we tune in to see who will be crowned the 18th winner, we wanted to check in on what the previous 17 champions are up to now.

Los Angeles Teachers, Parents Stand Up Against Politicians’ Threats

Despite pressure from local politicians, businesses, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Mayor Eric Garcetti, and the Los Angeles Times, teachers throughout California—and especially in Los Angeles—have mobilized to demand vaccinations before school reopening.

The teachers, backed by parents, have actively responded to this attack on their United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) union for demanding a full complement of safety measures. They note that this is the same lineup of forces who opposed the teachers strike 18 months ago that transformed UTLA into a much stronger union and won important victories.

On Saturday, February 20, a 100-car caravan stretched through downtown Los Angeles—sponsored by Students Deserve, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, Los Angeles Alliance for New Economy, Eastside Padres Contra Privatization, Reclaim Our Schools, and UTLA.

Cars were adorned with bilingual signs saying Not My Child, Schools Are Not Safe End Educational Racism Teachers Lives Matter AND Don’t Save the Economy by Risking a Child’s Life.

“UTLA stands strong with parents and students. Let’s be clear, our members have been working hard since the beginning of the pandemic and continue to do so,” UTLA organizer Mario Valenzuela told this reporter. “We want to physically return to our classrooms ASAP as well, but only when it’s safe for all. The vast communities that we serve are disproportionately impacted and have disproportionately less access to vaccines and healthcare. We want to go back in when the infection rate gets us below the purple tier, when we have access to vaccines, and when we can all be guaranteed PPEs, social distancing, well-working ventilation systems and an effective cleaning & sanitation regimen. We also urgently need reforms to support students’ immediate needs for do’s stance learning and an end to educational racism”

Parents also participated in the caravan including Jazmin Garcia who told the pre-caravan assembled, “We seek a safe environment in the schools. The virus has impacted the Black and Brown communities the most and a premature opening will negatively affect us. We say vaccinate teachers now. We reject Governor Newsom’s plan to reopen without this. Black parent voices are being ignored. The rich and primarily white politicians are pushing for reopening. We are happy that school police are out of the schools, a victory we have won and more nurses in the schools won through the strike.”

Jsane Tyler, representing Powerful Parents of the LA, told this reporter, “As Black parents, we would love to send our kids back but campuses must be safe.”

Opposition to opening the schools without vaccinating teachers is not unique to Los Angeles.

The California Federation of Teachers released the results of a recent poll of 1,217 of its members who are educators and classified professionals across California. The poll found teachers and school workers are eager to return to in-person instruction and agree by overwhelming margins that vaccines and multi-layered mitigation strategies must be at the center of any effort to reopen schools for in-person instruction.

In the poll, over 89% of educators and classified professionals rated as extremely important or important each of the following items when considering returning to in-person instruction:

  • Ensuring a COVID-19 vaccine is readily available for all educators and classified professionals. (90% extremely important or important.)
  • Having an adequate supply of personal protective equipment, or PPE, including masks, gloves, face shields, and cleaning equipment. (90% extremely important or important.)
  • Having ventilation plans that take weather and air quality into account and maximize fresh air circulation. (90% extremely important or important.)
  • Okay, where I wanted to know Having regular testing available for all educators and classified professionals. (89% extremely important or important.)

“This poll confirms that, by overwhelming margins, educators and classified professionals agree on the safety measures that are essential to safely resume in-person instruction. We want to be back in the classroom as soon as we can do so safely,” said CFT President Jeff Freitas. “Safe, phased-in approaches that include vaccinations for school workers are already underway in districts throughout the state. These districts should serve as a guide for safe resumption of classroom teaching in districts across California.”

More vaccines on the way

Gov. Newsom just announced that California will be receiving 1.27 million doses of the vaccines this week. Yet, Newsom has repeatedly argued against guaranteed vaccinations for teachers before in-person education resumes, saying the state does not currently have enough supply to inoculate teachers without making older and vulnerable Californians move further down the priority list. The vaccines exist. Do the math. So, it clearly becomes a political attack on the teachers’ union not to vaccinate.

A solution is to postpone over 65 vaccinations for one day and vaccinate all school employees statewide with the 200,000 doses available daily.

And under political pressure, Mayor Garcetti has announced that 10% of the vaccines the County will receive will be dedicated to teachers beginning March 1.

But why not vaccinate all the LA County teachers and school employees in a single day (about 40,000) and then begin the process of reopening after they receive their second dose, as I and other have called for?

Those who are pushing for school reopening’s without adequate safety measures cite the proclamations by President Biden and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. But we must understand that the CDC is again under political pressure NOT to do what they scientifically know is right. Politicians are playing with our lives. And Biden does what big business advises.

With vaccine shortages, let’s mandate Moderna/Pfizer/Johnson & Johnson to share formulas with production facilities worldwide? They exist. Without real international collaboration, thousands will unnecessarily die.

Los Angeles sheriff's deputy 'sold his badge' to protect drug dealers, US attorney says

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy made a deal with drug dealers to protect them in exchange for cash, according to a federal complaint filed in Los Angeles last week.

Deputy Kenneth Collins, 50, of Chino and three other men – Grant Valencia, 34, of Pomona and David Easter, 51, of Hyde Park and Maurice Desi Font, 56, – allegedly planned to take kickbacks in exchange for protecting drug traffickers, police say. Collins, Valencia and Easter face charges for “conspiracy to distribute controlled substances,” FOX 11 reported. Font is expected to be charged in a second criminal complaint, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The criminal complaint says Collins and the other men were reportedly preparing to “provide security” for the trafficking of about 13 pounds of methamphetamine and 45 pounds of cocaine to Las Vegas, the U.S. Department of Justice stated. The men were reportedly preparing to get paid $250,000 for the job.

The affidavit mentioned another transport where Collins made a deal with an undercover agent to transport methamphetamine, marijuana and counterfeit cigarettes to Las Vegas in November. The agent and Collins agreed on $25,000 for the safe travel. The methamphetamine was fake, court documents stated.

Collins, a 15-year veteran of the force, reportedly told one of the undercover FBI agents “we’re cops and all of our transports make it through,” court documents stated.

Collins was being investigated for months in connection to a “scheme to accept cash payments for providing security for illegal marijuana grow facilities,” ABC 7 reported.

An undercover agent “who was posing as a family member of a wealthy investor looking to finance an illegal marijuana grow house” met with the deputy in August, court documents stated.

Agents recorded him talking about “his extensive drug trafficking network, past criminal conduct and willingness to accept to use his law enforcement status for criminal purposes,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

“I fix problems,” Collins was heard telling an FBI agent. “I make a lot of things go away.”

The deputy also claimed to have “a very professional team” with “cops who travel with guns.”

"Deputy Collins sold his badge to assist an individual he thought was a drug trafficker," U.S. Attorney Nicola T. Hanna said. "The deputy allegedly used his status as a law enforcement officer as a guarantee when he promised safe travels for large quantities of illegal narcotics."

Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell called Collins’ arrest “tragic.”

"I guess if you look at it from a system standpoint, the system worked. We found out about criminal misconduct, caused an investigation to be done, worked with our federal partners and then ended up with what we saw today with an indictment," McDonnell said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department wrote in a statement on their Facebook page that they “brought up the allegations of criminal misconduct to the attention of federal investigators several months ago.”

Collins was reassigned to the County Services Bureau but has since been placed on administrative leave by the department pending the investigation.

Each suspect could face up to life in prison if convicted of drug trafficking conspiracy.

"Please send me information of a beekeeper to remove a bee hive from the Brentwood Farmers Market. It is on the sidewalk by the Brentwood elementary school in between Montana and San Vicente. Please email:[email protected]"

There was another alert about a "happy" hive at a historic Hollywood estate:
"We have this very happy hive that moved into a wall on our property about 6 months ago. recently it has grown exponentially. We had to drain our fountain because it seems like hundreds of bees would go there to drink everyday. It would scare our clients.
We hate to disturb the bees because they are obviously thriving, but we have to get them moved to a place where they won't scare away customers.
Can you help us? Or recommend an urban beekeeper that may want to remove this hive and take it to a more suitable location?

"Hello I am a firefighter with the City of Los Angeles, Assigned to Fire Station 37 in the Westwood Area 1090 Veteran Ave cross of Wilshire Blvd.We have a large honey bee issue inside our handball court at our fire station in two areas. In the Southwest corner, inside the structure, there is a large ball of bees larger then a basketball, which we can now see honey comb. These bees are entering through a silver dollar size hole below the roofline. We have an observation deck which sits above the handball court where the bees can be seen between the rafters about 8 ft from the upper deck. There is a fixed ladder which we use to gain access to the upper deck.
The other bee location is on the Northwest corner of the same handball court. These bees are entering through a baseball size hole in the exterior wall about 50 ft from the other location. This hole sits about 10 ft up the wall, where the bees are entering the wall. We do not see any activity on the opposite side of the wall, which leads us to believe the bees are living inside the wall.
We could contact our city services to have the bees removed, but their method in removal will most likely be the extermination of the bees. The bees have been in place for approximately two weeks without incident.

Today, her renowned skill and eclectic versatility with the violin, erhu, and piano can be heard throughout the globe. Chihsuan’s body of work spans across a multitude of genres and reaches beyond borders.

As a long-standing member of the legendary, Corky Siegel's ChamberBlues, Chihsuan has toured the world over and participated in such highly acclaimed stages and music festivals as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, Lollapalooza, SXSW, World Music Festival Chicago, CMJ, Feria de las Artes in Sinaloa, Festival de Musica de Camara in Aguascalientes and Noche de Primavera Festival in Mexico City, Mexico,

Her expansive collaborations carry over to world music ensembles Los Immortales, Funkadesi and Surabhi. In 2014, Chihsuan performed on recordings for Brian Wilson's 11th studio album "No Pier Pressure" and recorded with him on “Soundstage” for PBS with at the Venetian Theater in Las Vegas, and went on North America tour with Bollywood mega star, Arijit Singh. Later she appeared on more "Soundstage" productions with singer-songwriter Regina Spektor, Jim Peterick for Survivor and Katherine McPhee. In 2016, she also joined on a national tour with REM's bassist, Mike Mills.

In 2019, her participation in Writers Theater’s production of “Next to Normal” received a JEFF Award nomination in Chicago. Her original compositions “Aria” and “Hanoi” were awarded finalist at International Acoustic Music Awards. In 2020, she received her first Grammy Awards Nomination for the collaboration with The String Theory and spoken word artist, Sekou Andrews.

While being featured as a soloist in various recordings and performances, Chihsuan continues to work and record with a variety of artists and released her debut solo album Ways to Say Hello, a mix of original worldly electronic/acoustic compositions. Chihsuan is currently recording a studio album with her brand new duo ESCP along with Bob Garrett. They plan on releasing it in 2020.

Located on the southeast corner of De Longpre Avenue and Vine Street, the homey spot specializes in Peruvian comfort food such as lomo saltado (a Chinese-inspired beef stir-fry served with French fries) and several kinds of ceviches.

But as Rodriguez said, “to define Peruvian cuisine as only ceviche and lomo saltado does a disservice to all the different flavors we have from different influences.”

So the new space showcases another side of authentic Peruvian eats.

Los Balcones, which takes over the space that was home to the farm-to-table eatery Girasol, features a menu created by chefs Polit Castillo (who ran the kitchen at Girasol) and Ricardo Zarate, the celebrated Peruvian chef who came on board as a partner and creative director.

Diners can sample their housemade ceviche frito (a starter of marinated striped bass dredged in bread crumbs and fried) and sling pisco sours (a cocktail mixed with pisco, a Peruvian spirit made from grapes).

“Pisco is to Peruvians what Tequila is for Mexicans,” Rodriguez explained. “It’s something Peruvians love so much. If you’ve never tried it, you’re going to be fond of it.”

Larger bites include sweet potato gnocchi with pesto made from the Peruvian herb huacatay, costilla de short ribs slow-cooked for six hours, and chuleta de adobo (a dish of pork roast served with olluco potato ajiaco and pickled escabeche).

Going forward, Rodriguez plans to host guest chefs and occasionally add and take away items from the restaurant’s menu that truly represents Peru’s diverse culture.

4) For as rough as the Lakers’ last two games have been, Detroit might have suffered worse. The Pistons lost to Golden State and Utah by a combined 53 points in the lead-up to this game, which will serve as the conclusion to their five-game Western Conference road trip.

5) The Pistons are led by a likely All-Star who just gobbles up rebounds: Andre Drummond. The fifth-year pro is grabbing 13.5 boards per night — third-most in the NBA — while often making it a double-double by averaging 14.5 points. The Lakers struggled against a similar player the day before, allowing DeAndre Jordan to tally 24 points and 20 rebounds, though much of that had to do with the looks Chris Paul was setting him up for.

6) The Pistons don’t have any players among the NBA’s top 50 in individual scoring, but Tobias Harris leads the team with 16.5 points and has hit double figures in 11 straight games. The University of Tennessee product has felt it from across the floor this year, averaging career-highs in percentage from the field (48.0), on 3-pointers (34.3) and at the free throw line (90.0) — the last of which ranks sixth in the league.

7) The Pistons employ a 290-pound behemoth who has played pretty well off the bench during this road trip. Boban Marjanovic — who is tied with Kristaps Porzingis for the league’s tallest player at 7-foot-3 — is nearly averaging a double-double over his last four games (10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds) while shooting 14-of-23 from the field and 14-of-16 on free throws.

8) Local product Stanley Johnson hasn’t carved out much of a role in his second season with the Pistons, averaging only 3.8 points on 37.3 percent shooting. A four-time CIF State champion at Santa Ana’s Mater Dei High, Johnson finally reached 10 points in Friday’s loss to Utah, ending a 30-game streak of single-digit scoring.

9) Johnson might see the floor a bit more with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope likely out due to a strained rotator cuff. KCP leads the Pistons in 3-pointers (2.2) and 3-point percentage (40.4) while also playing strong perimeter defense. He was hot just before his injury, scoring 47 points in his previous two games combined.

10) The Pistons are one of the league’s best at winning the possession battle, committing the NBA’s fewest turnovers (12.1) while allowing the fewest offensive rebounds (8.2). They often choose to use that extended time with the ball by shooting from mid-range instead of deep, where they rank second-to-last in made 3-pointers (7.8).

In 1996, Kobe Bryant became the youngest basketball player to ever enter the NBA straight out of high school. And that was only the first of many career-long accomplishments. The 6-foot 6-inch small forward won five NBA titles with the Lakers and two Olympic gold medals for the United States. Bryant won two NBA Finals MVP awards and is fourth on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 33,643 points. The basketball legend died on Jan. 26, 2020 in a California helicopter crash at the age of 41.

The former Washington Post wine columnist is also the author of What to Drink with What You Eat, which was named the IACP Cookbook of the Year and Georges Duboeuf Wine Book of the Year Culinary Artistry, which Food & Wine named one of the world’s best cookbooks and Becoming a Chef, which the New York Times Business section described as “a chef’s guide for executives.” She lives with her husband, author and photographer Andrew Dornenburg, in New York City.

Michael Anthony is Executive Chef and Partner of Gramercy Tavern, as well as Executive Chef and Managing Director of Untitled and Studio Cafe at the Whitney Museum of American Art. An alum of Daniel and March restaurants, Mike was formerly a chef at Blue Hill in Manhattan and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, New York. He joined Gramercy Tavern as the Executive Chef in 2006. Under his leadership, the restaurant has earned a three-star New York Times review (2007) and James Beard Awards for “Outstanding Restaurant” (2008) and “Best Chef: New York City” (2012). In 2015, Mike won the James Beard Award for “Outstanding Chef,” a national recognition. His book, V is for Vegetables, won the 2015 James Beard Award for Best Vegetable-Focused Cookbook.

Damon Baehrel works completely alone in his eponymous restaurant, located in the basement of his and his wife Elizabeth’s home in rural Earlton, NY, about 2 1/2 hours north of Manhattan on the 12-acre property/Native farm that is the only source of ingredients/components for his original self-derived Native Harvest Cuisine. The intimate restaurant has become a sought-after destination for food enthusiasts from around the world since its opening in 1989. In addition to being a chef and organic grower, Damon is a master forager as well as native plant and mushroom expert. He creates by hand every component required to execute the 5+ hour Native Harvest Experience including unique flours, pressed oils, tree sap brines and vinegars, cheeses, pineneedle-cured meats, and one-of-a-kind seasonings. The legendary, ever-changing Native Harvest Tasting menu is prepared and served to dining guests personally by Damon. The self-taught chef, who has been a semifinalist for the James Beard Award, recently authored, photographed, and published his first book, Native Harvest: The Inspirational Cuisine Of Damon Baehrel.

Amanda Cohen is the chef and owner of Dirt Candy, the award-winning vegetable restaurant on New York City’s Lower East Side. Dirt Candy was the first vegetable-focused restaurant in the city and the leader of the vegetable-forward movement. The restaurant’s original location only had 18 seats and was open for six years, during which time it became the first vegetarian restaurant in 17 years to receive two stars from the New York Times, was recognized by the Michelin Guide five years in a row, and won awards from Gourmet magazine, the Village Voice, and many others. Its new location opened in January, 2015 and it was the first restaurant in the city to eliminate tipping and share profits with its employees. Amanda was the first vegetarian chef to compete on Iron Chef America and her comic book cookbook, Dirt Candy: A Cookbook, is the first graphic novel cookbook to be published in North America. It’s currently in its sixth printing. She is also a Canadian.

In a unique take on the classic literary salon, Georgette Farkas continues her Saturday “Author! Author!” lunch series at her restaurant, Rotisserie Georgette, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. “We are privileged to have a coterie of renowned authors as regulars here at the Rotisserie, and now a select few have agreed to take part in intimate events where our guests can meet them over lunch to discuss their books and shared passions,” explains the restaurateur. Daniel Boulud

Daniel Boulud is considered one of America’s leading culinary authorities and one of the most revered chefs in New York, his home since 1982. He is chef-owner of 13 restaurants around the world, and is best known for his eponymous, exquisitely refined DANIEL on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Outside of New York, the chef’s cooking can be found in London, Singapore, Toronto, Montréal, Miami, Palm Beach, Washington DC, and Boston. Daniel is the author of nine cookbooks (including Letters to a Young Chef), the recipient of multiple James Beard Foundation awards including “Outstanding Chef” and “Outstanding Restaurateur,” as well as the Culinary Institute of America’s “Chef of the Year Award” (2011) and The World’s 50 Best Restaurants “Lifetime Achievement Award” (2015). Daniel was named a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government in 2006 in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of French culture. He is a generous supporter and Co-President of Citymeals-on-Wheels for more than two decades, and is Chairman of the Ment’or BKB foundation.

Formerly Executive Chef of The NoMad (where under his leadership it was awarded a Michelin star each year and was ranked#62 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list) and Chef de Cuisine of Eleven Madison Park, James Kent is in the process of using his 20-plus years of restaurant experience to build his flagship restaurant that will be opening in the coming year in New York. James joined the team at Eleven Madison Park as a line cook in the spring of 2007 and was quickly promoted to sous chef. In 2011, James was chosen to represent the United States at the international finals of the Bocuse D’Or in Lyon, France. After a full year of training for this culinary competition, he placed tenth in the world. Upon returning to New York, James was named chef de cuisine of Eleven Madison Park and during his time there, the restaurant received numerous accolades including four stars from the New York Times, three Michelin stars, and a coveted spot on the list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Lior Lev Sercarz

Lior Lev Sercarz is the chef, spice blender, and owner of La Boite in New York City. Lior and La Boite have been featured in publications including The New York Times, Vogue, InStyle, Every Day with Rachel Ray, Food & Wine, and the Saveur 100. After completing three years as a sargeant of the Israeli army, Lior traveled to South America where he expanded his passion for cooking and world cuisines, later enrolling in the acclaimed Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon. In 2002, Lior brought his newfound understanding of spice blending with him from France to New York, where he had the honor of working with Chef Daniel Boulud as a sous chef and catering chef at his flagship restaurant DANIEL. He left DANIEL in 2006 to start La Boite, and in 2011 he opened La Boite Biscuits & Spices, an art gallery and spice shop in Hells Kitchen. His books include The Art of Blending and The Spice Companion.

The quake was four miles west of Fullerton. The same epicenter has been producing several comparable quakes since spring 2014. In April 2014, the epicenter was very active. At the time, one quake was one mile east of La Habra. The quake was two miles southwest of Rowland Heights. The quake was two miles northwest of Brea and roughly four miles southeast of Hacienda Heights.

Los Angeles earthquakes in 2014 were generally close to this epicenter. But in 2012, most of the So Cal quakes were near Palm Springs. For example in November 2012, one quake was fourteen miles south of Twenty-nine Palms, nineteen miles northeast of Indio, nineteen miles northeast of Coachella. The quake was one hundred miles north of San Diego. Mapping revealed that the quake was east of San Bernardino and Redlands, and north of Indio. The quake was east of Riverside and Cathedral City, while north of Escondido.

Similarly a 4.1 magnitude quake hit in September 20112. That quake was close to Beaumont and Mentone and roughly nine miles east of Moreno Valley. The quake was reportedly just off the 60 Moreno Valley Freeways, just before the 79 interchange at Beaumont. The quake was centered exiting Moreno Valley and before entering Beaumont, USGS reported to news at the time.
